Speed cameras have saved lives
From today we may stand less chance of being caught by a speed camera.
But that is no reason for any of us to break the speed limit – especially in built up areas.
When speed cameras were first introduced and thousands of people were caught there was quite an outcry.
Many drivers who had previously unblemished licences found themselves amassing points.

Many felt they were being unfairly penalised for a momentary slip.
But then drivers started to go on speed awareness courses to avoid getting points on their licences.
And slowly but surely attitudes changed.
They discovered that everyone caught speeding had an excuse.
But being late for work or an appointment is no reason to speed because speeding puts other people's lives at risk.
After a half-day's awareness course most drivers recognised that pushing 40mph in a 30mph limit was putting lives in danger.
And many adjusted their driving, not simply for a few days or whenever they spotted a speed camera but for good.
We may have hated them at first but these cameras have helped teach many of us a lesson.
And who knows how many lives they have saved as a result.
