Special constable policing awards
They volunteer their time, often while juggling full-time positions, to provide a vital link between the police force and the local community – so it is hardly surprising the word special forms part of their job title.
From manning large events across the region, working alongside neighbourhood networking teams to making arrests, Special Constables give up their time to ensure that police forces across the region have the essential resources needed in the fight against crime.
In the fourth of its Avon and Somerset Community Policing Awards features, the Western Daily Press today looks at the men and women who dedicate their free time to work alongside regular police.
They have been nominated by their fellow officers, local councils, community groups, and members of the public.
A judging panel of Avon and Somerset Police Authority chairman Dr Moira Hamlin; authority member Councillor Alan Ham; Daily Press assistant editor Andy Smith and Mike Parfitt, head of marketing, central government and home affairs for one of the awards' sponsors, BT, then helped decide the winners.
Mr Smith said: "Special Constables hold a special place in the heart of so many urban and rural communities through the West.
"People from all walks of life join the Specials, as they're affectionately known, for many reasons, but what was clear from all those shortlisted for this award was a strong desire to give something back to the community.
"We were looking for our winners to be those who used the opportunity to become an essential part of life in their neighbourhood, to improve the quality of life for residents, to cut crime and the fear of crime and to integrate with members of society from all walks of life.
"We were delighted by the outstanding qualities of those nominated for this award."
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony next week at Cadbury House, Congresbury.
