BRAVO to Avon Fire Authority and its opposition to the Government's plan to create a regional control.

The response of the fire services within the region at the time of the fire on Weston's Grand Pier was magnificent and shows that regionalisation is not necessary.

In fact, regionalisation would probably have meant that the various fire services in the region could not have been collated quite so efficiently and rapidly.

I am totally opposed to the regionalisation of this country at the behest of the European Union.

As a practising accountant, I have tried repeatedly to obtain figures from the South West Regional Assembly.

It costs about £6 million per annum to run and this can be multiplied by at least eight times to cover the country as a whole. What exactly does it do? What benefits does it provide? The answer is quite simply, none.

“Without taking into account that the land purchased for the new regional control centre was on the flood plain so more consultation had to be carried out before planning permission couyld be granted!”
