Singers will take part in the final of the Southmead karaoke competition on Sunday, raising money for the community's carol bus.

Seven finalists between the ages of 11 and 65 will show off their vocal talents in front of a panel of judges that includes former boxing world champion Glenn Catley and prospective MP Charlotte Leslie.

The competition will be the highlight of an afternoon of entertainment by performers at the Southmead Community Centre, on Greystoke Avenue.

The Southmead Pride Majorettes and D-Street, a hip hop dance troupe, will also be at the event. The two groups are sponsored by the Southmead carol bus, which is now in its seventh year.

It is part of the Southmead Pride project, which was set up by florist Cliff Howell to bring the community together and has raised thousands of pounds for charities, sports clubs and groups.

Organiser Cliff Howell said: "This looks set to be a fantastic event for the community and we hope to raise a lot of money as well.

"Over the years, Southmead Pride has helped out countless good causes and sponsored local groups, for both young and old.

"The parade around Southmead will start from Greystoke Avenue on December 18 at 5.30pm, so put the date in your diaries, come along and get some Christmas spirit back into the community."

Miss Leslie said: "Cliff has done remarkable things in this community.

"He is a public-spirited man who has gone out and really made a difference. It just shows what one man can do. He's an inspiration, and the Southmead karaoke contest deserves to be a roaring success."

Sunday's competition starts at 3pm. Tickets cost £5. For more information, call 01179 593999.
