Southmead beat freeze to move six points clear
FOR the second week running, the freezing weather decimated the Suburban league programme, with only nine games going ahead.
Premier I leaders Southmead CS Athletic were involved in the only top-flight fixture to beat the weather – and they took full advantage, beating Cadbury Heath Reserves 4-1 to open a six-point lead.
Danny Glancy scored twice, with Rob Sivers and Luke Coglan also on target.
Little Stoke, who have played three games less than Southmead, lead the chasing pack, while last season's champions Bristol Telephones are 11 points but have six games in hand.
Only one game was also played in Premier II and that was down to the hard work of the clubs, Avonmouth and Severn Beach. Chris George, secretary of Avonmouth, tried hard to get the game on, but when the pitch was ruled unfit he agreed to move the game to their opponents' ground at short notice.
Severn Beach, who are unbeaten this season, moved into third place by winning 1-0 with a goal from Tom Rees.
Stoke Gifford United lead the table by three points from Easton Cowboys Suburbia, who have a game in hand.
Nuno Jose Felix and Matt Roberts were the Totterdown POB marksmen as they beat Golden Hill Sports 2-0 to move up to third place behind unbeaten leaders Ridings High Reserves and Ingleside in Division I.
No games were played in Division II, where leaders Lebeq United have a 10-point lead over Downend Foresters.
Division III leaders Whitchurch Reserves' game at Keynsham Town A was called off, and second-placed Poker County UK won 7-0 at Filton Athletic Reserves to close to within four points with three games in hand. Stoke Rangers are in third place, level on points with Poker County UK.
Division IV leaders Glenside Five Reserves lost for the first time this season, going down 2-1 at AFC Keynsham.
Wayne Quarrie put Glenside in front, but Danny Cardy equalised out of the blue with a 35-yard volley and Chris Patch scored the winner from the penalty spot.
Long Ashton Reserves are in second place, on the same number of points as Glenside, having played a game more, while St Anne's Town are five points behind with four games in hand.
Luis Balcazar scored a consolation goal for Brandon Sports, who crashed 5-1 at home to AEK Boco Colts.
Broad Walk lead Division V by five points and took their goal tally for the season to 87 after winning 6-1 at Totterdown POB Reserves.
Leading scorer Aaron Price and Tom Parker both netted twice, with Chris Pippard and Lee Owen also on the mark.
Second-placed Parson Street OB had their game at Rockleaze Rangers B postponed, but third-placed Downend Foresters Reserves took their unbeaten run to five games with a comfortable 4-0 home victory over Stoke Gifford United A. Joe Spearrey (2), Dan and Ryan Parry scored for Foresters.
Rolls Royce lost for the third game running and are without a win in five after slumping 7-0 at home to Knowle Rangers.
