Two South Gloucestershire teenagers, violinist Claire Green and drummer Will Haskins, came first and second in a student film composer of the year competition.

Claire, 15, from Almondsbury, won the title ahead of more than 1,800 hopefuls from around the country.

And Will, 14, of Wick, took second in the category, which was part of the Sibelius Student Composer of the Year competition.

Claire, who goes to Marlwood School in Alveston will have her piece performed at the awards in the Royal Academy of Music next month.

For the competition, Will and Claire had to put music to a short film extract. After they were shortlisted, the public listened to the pieces and voted online for their favourite before the judges made their choice.

The judges included Oscar-winning composer Dario Marianelli, who wrote the score for Atonement, film producer Lord Puttnam and David Arnold, whose work includes James Bond movie Quantum of Solace.

Claire will also receive prize money and take part in a composing master class from one of the judges.

"It feels incredible to win. I don't think it's sunk in properly yet because life is still going on – I still have homework due in and music practice to get done," she said.

"When I get the chance to stop and really think about it, it amazes me that these judges, who are regarded so highly in the music world, could possibly think that the music I produce is worth winning a national competition."

Will, a pupil of Kingsfield School, Warmley, said: "I'm really pleased to be runner- up as it wasn't expected. It's great to have my music recognised and has spurred me to keep going."
