South Bristol link road 'needs councils working together'

If you are going to build new roads in Bristol, particularly an A370/A38 link, it needs to be a proper transport corridor, not a playtime one.

Everything that is going on at the moment seems to be bits and pieces. It needs to be a proper link, the right width, that can take rapid transit, a dual carriageway in both directions and be run as a proper major route.

To talk about building a single carriageway is a joke. Winterstoke Road is already a dual carriageway, why replace it with a single one?

It would be a half-hearted, over-regulated road with more space for buses, cycles and pedestrians than cars, despite the fact that 85 per cent of journeys are made by car.

We need a proper link now to rejuvenate south Bristol.

With regards to the exact route, it should be dependent on people's travel needs, established by a survey on Winterstoke Road, to see where motorists wish to travel.

If you were really thinking about it, there needs to be a motorway for south Bristol, well before the M32, between Bath and the M32, but it will not happen.

The most disappointing thing I heard this week was when they said a co-ordinated transport authority is not needed across the Avon area.

The majority of people going into south Bristol are coming from North Somerset, which needs councils to be working together. Greater Bristol is the issue.

However, the reality will probably be two years of squabbling between councils.

All the things that have happened in the past 30 years have done nothing to improve transport but have done everything to slow it down.

“Very amusing comments by Bob Bull, self-styled leader of the Association of British Petrolheads...er...Drivers.”

“When will the Evening Post realise that Bob Bull is a spoof? Even the name hints it. The idea if someone who chooses to live in Portishead and is then "surprised" by the traffic jams, and blames bicycles and buses for them.

Then there's the whole Association of British Drivers web site, blue with Comic Sans font, aren't those hints? Don't they provide cues that its a spoof? Come on, join in the joke. Only we in Bristol Traffic represent bristol's car drivers.”

“Since when do Bob Bull rants constitute news stories?”
