Sooner we get out the better
I WAS unsure whether I should react with a wry smile or feel insulted by the recent American lecture on Great Britain's relationship with the European Union.
Firstly, I thought it was a widely observed international convection that another state did not intervene in the sovereign affairs of an ally, however interested one may be in their economic or political fortunes.
Perhaps the Democratic President of the United States has forgotten that basic dictum of the American War of Independence of "no taxation without representation". Secondly, the European Union is no longer a free trade area but a protectivist cartel, increasingly throttled by red-tape and regulations and governed by an unaccountable elite of Eurocrats based in Brussels. The sooner the United Kingdom withdraws from this undemocratic and economically futureless entity the better.
