Marcus Trescothick took over the Somerset captaincy from the injured Justin Langer for the Championship match against Lancashire at Taunton this morning.

The former England man immediately chose to bowl after winning the toss and saw the visitors ease to 89-1.

Somerset made the breakthrough in the 22nd over after Ben Phillips had struck Luke Sutton on the head with a bouncer that cut the former Taunton wicketkeeper.

Following lengthy treatment, Sutton edged down the leg-side next ball for 26, to make the score 58-1.

Paul Horton was 49 not out with Mal Loye unbeaten on 13.

Somerset gave a first-class debut to teenager Jos Buttler in place of skipper Langer, who was hit in the shoulder in last night's Pro40 defeat to Essex.

There was also a recall for fast bowler David Stiff, who replaced Omari Banks to leave the home side without a specialist spinner.
