Somerset head coach Andy Hurry admitted his side had been "sloppy" to allow Worcestershire to make 408-4 on day one of their Championship match at Taunton.

Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell was dropped on 28 and went on to hammer 232 not out.

"It has been a very disappointing day," said Hurry. "At times we were quite sloppy and we lost our discipline. Perhaps we expected to roll these guys over after the start we had.

"We have three days left to play and we have a lot of hard work to do between now and Saturday because our destiny is in our own hands. We have to do what we did against Lancashire and take five wickets very quickly.

"I am disappointed in the way we finished the last session. We didn't create very much. It is important we turn up with the right attitude in the morning.

"We know how hard it is to try to get 20 wickets here at Taunton and it has cost us dearly in this Championship campaign. Dale Benkenstein got 180 here, having been dropped, Murray Goodwin 320, VVS Laxman last week 113 and now Mitchell dropped in the 20s. It tells its own story."

Ben Phillips was the unlucky bowler when Mitchell was dropped. He conceded just 48 runs from his 20 overs.

"He is in great nick," said Hurry. "He had a back spasm a few weeks ago but he has come back really strongly. The captain wants to throw the ball to people with control and he was outstanding today."

Somerset CCC hope fast bowler Mark Turner will return soon after being rested. "He has gone for a precautiuonary scan on his back," Hurry added.

"It is only for his and our peace of mind. There are no symptoms to suggest he has a stress fracture. He is being rested with a view to being fit for selection for the Durham (Pro40) game."
