Somerset captain Justin Langer cracked 72 not out from 67 balls as he led an Australian Prime Minister's XI to a win against the touring New Zealanders in Canberra.

The former Test opener does not play at state level any longer in his homeland but showed he remains a fine batsman as his team won by six wickets.

After he has played in the Indian Premier League, Langer will return to Taunton for the 2009 season, although exactly when remains undecided.

Somerset coach Andy Hurry said: "From speaking to him I know he wants to spend as much time as he possibly can here.

"He is very passionate about the season. Last year he showed an immense amount of commitment by turning down his IPL contract."
