Justin Langer yesterday became Australia's new Test batting coach.

And the recently-retired former Somerset CCC skipper described his appointment as an "apprenticeship".

Langer, 38, who retired from all forms of cricket last month, said he jumped at the chance to work alongside Australian Test skipper Ricky Ponting and head coach Tim Nielsen.

"We are thrilled to have a player of Justin's experience working with the Test team," said Cricket Australia general manager Michael Brown.

He added: "Justin was renowned for his professional approach to preparation and his commitment to play for his country.

"He will help many young players as our team continues to develop."
