Somerset give hungry Turner a key role
YOUNG paceman Mark Turner is being lined up for a key role in Somerset's season finale.
The former Durham man will play in tomorrow's decisive Pro40 League game against Lancashire and could also feature in the Championship match against Yorkshire at Scarborough next week.
Somerset drew with Durham yesterday and were overtaken at the top of Division One by Hamsphire, who beat Surrey. However, as the Southampton side have only one game left, they can almost be discounted as title contenders.
But of more immediate concern is the 40-over game at Liverpool. Somerset must win to have a chance of avoiding relegation.
If they do so they will reach seven points, leapfrog Lancashire and finish at worst third bottom.
That would put them into a play-off next Sunday against the team who finish third in Division Two.
But if Somerset win and Durham or Worcestershire lose, the Sabres may stay up anyway, depending on their final net run-rates.
Skipper Justin Langer said: "It is a huge game for us. I have said for a couple of years our one-day cricket hasn't been great but it is an opportunity for us.
"We have to have a real re-think of that over the winter and it would be nice to still be in the first division to have another crack at it next year.
"Mark Turner will definitely play on Sunday – no doubt about that. I love his energy and he was brilliant in the last one-day game, he got man of the match against Worcester.
"He will come into the frame for the four-day game at Scarborough as well because in one of the next three games we have to take 20 wickets.
"He is an exciting bowler. In an ideal world he would be a foot taller but his energy is brilliant, awesome.
"He has got an incredible work ethic and he is hungry and passionate for cricket. Let's hope he comes on the next few years."
Wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter is still sidelined by his ankle problem so Carl Gazzard continues to stand in. Kieswetter remains hopeful of beign fit for Scarborough.
All-rounder Ian Blackwell has again been left out of the squad that will travel to the north west.
