Somerset crash to Champions League defeat
Somerset lost their second Champions League game today by 44 runs to Trinidad and Tobago in Bangalore.
The Sabres, who beat Deccan Chargers by one wicket on Saturday, felt confident at the halfway stage after restricting the West Indians to 150-9 from their 20 overs.
In reply Somerset were never up with the required rate after Dwayne Bravo claimed two early wickets. Their old failing against spin was also evident as they made just 106.
Justin Langer's men will now have to wait until Wednesday's match between T&T and Deccan to see if they qualify for the next stage or go home.
Given the margin of defeat, Somerset must now pray for a Trinidad and Tobago to win or they are realistically out.
Marcus Trescothick was the first to go in the second over when he thin-edged Dwayne Bravo behind for three.
Langer then survived a strong leg before wicket appeal and a nick past the wicketkeeper against the spin of Samuel Badree.
And Dwayne Bravo then removed Craig Kieswetter when the wicketkeeper tried to drive a lifting ball through the covers and holed out for four.
Langer was put out of his misery against spin in the next over when, after failing to successfully sweep Sherwin Ganga, he lofted the off-spinner to backward square-leg for 15 to reduce Somerset to 28-3.
Arul Suppiah was then dropped on one by the deep mid-wicket fielder off Dave Mohammed's first ball and tight spin bowling from Trinidad and Tobago forced the required run-rate past ten per over.
Suppiah never looked comfortable and was soon bowled heaving at Mohammed for 12 and Pete Trego was caught at point off the chinaman bowler trying to reverse-sweep for the same score.
From 69-5 with only six overs remaining, Somerset's race was run and the task was merely to reduce the margin of defeat in case Deccan beat T&T on Wednesday and each team finishes level on points and qualification goes down to net run-rate.
However, James Hildreth (0) was quickly run out by Ravi Rampaul's throw and Ben Phillips soon lofted Sherwin Ganga to mid-wicket for five.
Alfonso Thomas, the hero of Saturday, was run out by Daren Ganga for nine and Dwayne Bravo bowled Max Waller for one before having Charl Willoughby caught behind off the last ball of the game.
Zander de Bruyn was the only batsman to keep his head, finishing 43 not out.
Earlier, Somerset had lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. Again Willoughby was a little expensive and Phillips' first two balls went for four and six.
But West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons - the nephew of former opener Phil - soon slashed the latter bowler and was caught at third man for 22.
And Willoughby returned at the other end to york William Perkins in the next over and also pull off a smart caught and bowled to remove Darren Bravo for nine.
Then Waller's second ball of the tournament dismissed the huge wicket of Dwayne Bravo.
A wide turning ball was half-driven into the hands of gully fielder Suppiah to reduce Trindiad and Tobago to 60-4. Somerset had taken four wickets in ten balls after their opponents had been 43-0.
Daren Ganga was then dropped by Trego at midwicket on 21 off Waller. But he was bowled off his pad by the young leg-spinner next ball for 23.
Waller finished with two for 27 from his four overs and fellow spinner Suppiah bowled exceptionally for none for 19 from his allocation.
And Willoughby returned to have the dangerous Kieron Pollard caught at cover off a full toss for 12.
Pollard was unlucky because the delivery reached him above waist heigh and should have been a no-ball but it was not called and the South African finished with three for 35 from his four overs.
Death bowler Thomas came back and bowled a slogging Rampaul for two and also removed Ramdin in similar fashion for a run-a-ball top score of 39 in the final over.
Then Thomas was gifted a run out when Mohammed blocked the ball back to the bowler and ran past it allowing the South African to pick up and disturb the bails.
