I SEE Somali women want their own swimming sessions at Horfield Leisure Centre because of their religion they can't mix with other swimmers.

They say they can't go to Easton Swimming Baths because it is too far to go. I say get a bus.

Who is going to pay for this and the extra staff needed?

What next? Shutting Cabot Circus for a day so they can do their shopping?

This country is becoming a joke. These people come here for a better life so they tell us. They get a house and all the benefits and if they can't get what they want they demonstrate.

All I say they must be very lucky to be able to afford swimming sessions when people are on the breadline with all these cuts. I can imagine if it was the other way around we wouldn't stand a chance.

But they all say Britain is good. Yes for them, not us it seems.

“Recent letters published by the "post" regarding requests from the local Somali community for exclusive use of a Local Authority sports centre highlight a need for an open debate of the broader issue of immigration.

The subject generally, and in particular the treatment that the various categories of immigrants receive in the UK when compared with the treatment they receive in other countries, is frequently discussed wherever people meet. These discussions are invariably of an informal nature, and are usually peppered with inaccuracies, and a misunderstanding of the actual position. There is however little informed debate based on the facts, and there seems to be a fear, for whatever reason, of full and frank discussion either in the media, or political circles. It is almost perceived as racist to even raise the issue, unless it is to comment about how good on going immigration is for the country.

I suggest therefore that it would be beneficial if a prominent and respected newspaper, like the "Post" was to undertake a detailed investigation into the whole subject, with particular reference to how Bristol is affected. If, for no other reason, it would be helpful to explode some of the more outrageous myths that permeate the often ill informed informal debate.

Areas, which might be looked at, include:

    • The current numbers and origins of the various categories, Legal/ Illegal, asylum seekers/economic both EU and Non EU, compared with 10 years ago.

    • The eligibility criteria and quantum of benefits.

    • The views of both the indigenous population, and those of recent immigrants.

Greater tolerance and understanding can only be achieved when a more informed appreciation of the true facts is openly debated”

“This is ridiculous. I have just come back from Tunisia a Muslim country where the women were happily swimming in the pool (fully clothed) and mixing with Western holidaymakers. Its seems in this country they want to twist everything their way. I hope the Council does not allow this to happen.”
