Ross Cox was the hero for Yate United Under-12s as they pipped big rivals Warmley Rangers 1-0 in the final of the Gloucestershire Cup at Almondsbury.

In doing so, they became the first Yate United team at any age level in the history of the competition to clinch a winners' trophy.

The sides are embroiled in a tight race to be crowned champions of the Avon Youth League and from the start it was clear both were determined to get their hands on the cup.

Warmley, who head Division I with games in hand, began strongly but Yate snatched the lead eight minutes before half-time with a solo effort from striker Cox, who collected the ball in midfield and skipped past two Warmley tackles before hitting a thunderous shot across the keeper and into the net for the winner.

Yate came out for the restart buoyed by their slender advantage and, apart from one Warmley free-kick which sailed over the bar, they held firm to record a notable victory.

Yate United: Ben Worlock, James Bracey, Jay Davis, Joe Guest, Kieren Provis, Lewis Bezer, Liam Vaulters, Lloyd Dodge, Markus Rankin, Matt Baker, Max Nethercott, Ross Cox, Samuel Gonzalo, Sean Keet, Thomas Anthony.
