Snowed out concert still raises £800 for Frenchay Hospital charity
A charity based at Frenchay Hospital will get a boost of more than £800 even though a concert organised in its support had to be cancelled.
South Gloucestershire Council chairman Brian Freeguard had lined up Elvis look-a-like Rocking Gerry and singer and guitarist Rob Cook for the concert at the Olympus Theatre at Filton College's WISE campus earlier this month. But a heavy snowfall led to it being called off.
Councillor Freeguard, 68, of Filton Park, said despite not being able to enjoy the entertainment, many people who had already bought tickets or had pledged to go along on the night told him to keep the money and pass it on to the Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust (BUST).
He said: "It means more than £800 has gone to BUST thanks to the generosity of the public, friends and councillors."
Mr Freeguard is trying to raise £10,000 in his year of office, which comes to an end in May, and is well on his way to meeting his target.
He wanted to help the organisation after his wife, Jill, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.
Money raised will be used by BUST to buy specialist diagnostic equipment.
