Evander Sno is likely to miss Bristol City's Coca-Cola Championship clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Dutch midfielder was originally scheduled to return to Bristol this week after attending his grandmother's funeral in Surinam.

But the ceremony has been put back and the 22-year-old loan signing from Ajax will now struggle to make it to south London in time for the weekend.

City manager Gary Johnson confirmed: "Evander has to be rated doubtful for the Palace game.

"We expected him to be back this week, but it seems funerals in that part of South America are a major event and can go on for quite a few days.

"The latest we've heard is that he is not expected to catch a flight until Thursday or Friday and, given the distance involved, it's unlikely he'll make it in time to play on Saturday.

"We didn't have a problem with him going, because he was brought up by his grandmother and her death came as a big shock to him.

"Now it's just a case of waiting for him to arrive back and seeing what kind of condition he is in."

Sno's late return will prevent Johnson naming his starting line-up of choice. But City's manager insisted he has sufficient midfield options to cover for the Dutchman's likely absence, even though Lee Johnson has been loaned to Derby County.

Gavin Williams has fully recovered from the head injury which ruled him out of the Christmas Bank Holiday game against Watford and will be in contention for a place in the team.

Johnson said: "Players always have to wait eight days after a concussion and that's why Gavin was not involved last week.

"But he's back with the group this week and in training and he will be available to us at Palace."

Lewin Nyatanga serves a one-match suspension following his sending-off against Watford and Academy products Christian Ribeiro and James Wilson will provide defensive cover on the bench in the continued absence of the injured Jamie McCombe.

Meanwhile, the cold snap has disrupted City's training regime and Johnson has opted to make use of the facilities at Filton Academy to the north of the city.

He added: "It's always a problem in this weather when the training ground freezes over and we've been working on the all-weather surfaces at Filton this week.

"But even those can be icy and it means we have to be careful about how we manage those lads with minor knocks and niggles.

"It's at times like this you want your chairman to come up with a few grand so we can all get away to somewhere like Tenerife for a few days and train in the warm!"

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are taking extra precautions to ensure Saturday's game goes ahead.

The Selhurst Park playing surface has been covered and the South London club have brought in hot air blowers in a bid to beat the sub-zero temperatures forecast for the South East towards the end of the week.

City's rescheduled FA Cup third-round tie against Cardiff at Ashton Gate next Tuesday will be broadcast live on S4C.

The coverage includes English language subtitles and the match will also be available to watch live on the S4C website, s4c.co.uk

S4C is available on all platforms in Wales and on Sky 134 and Freesat 120 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

    “@ Paul

Actually, some may say Cole Skuse has turned into a fine player after being "molly coddled" all these years! Plus, we dont have a great record at producing youngsters, certainly not at this level! A few, but not many even long before GJ's stint here.

Does anyone remember Jennison Myre Williams? The game against Tranmere? He played a few games for us, then that one game was having a stinker and the crowd got on his back, and i mean really got on his back so much that you could literally see the confidence drain from him on the pitch. GJ had only just arrived then, i often wonder whether that day has an effect on the way he handles our younger players. I reckon it would. In general we have good fans but, sadly there is a loudly spoken bad element who cause nothing but harm at AG yet they deluded into thinking they are reason behind any success, sad but true.”

“I hope the company providing the hot air blowers to Palace got paid up front! You'd have thought with Warnock in charge there'd be no shortage of hot air!”

“I agree give the youth players a chance, we used to produce good youth player before johnson came in now nothing. I wanna see tristan plummer few years ago there was prem teams after him if he is good enough to play for england he must be good enough to be given a chance at city. Come on johnson give the young lads a chance to prove themselfs!!!”

    “@Chris, Bristol.

Unless Artus and the other Academy players are given a chance to shine on the pitch we will not know whether they are good enough for this level.

Mollycoddling these Academy players is not helping their development one bit.

Are we the only club in the country who fail to develop youth players into first team regulars?

Something has gone horribly wrong with this process in recent years.”

“Ummm¿can¿t see Artus being good enough to break through. I am critical of Johnson for not being prepared to give Ribeiro and Wilson a chance in the 18, but not so with his evaluation of Artus. Be nice to be proved wrong though.

Going back to the earlier comments about Sno, I think that he may not be earning the megabucks many might believe. With loans between domestic clubs the player must receive the same pay when he goes out on loan. Be that all paid by the new club, or as in the case of Trundle, topped up from the loaning club. I would imagine that something similar exists with loans between UEFA countries. Although Ajax are a top European club, the pay within the Dutch leagues is nowhere near as high as in England. And Sno maybe one of their promising young players but he certainly is not regular first team squad for them. The same might apply with Saborio where the pay in Swiss football is even less.”

“Artus was on the bench against Watford! Good to see some people take note of whats happening down the gate! My worry there is that he struggled in League One with Cheltenham, so im not sure how he will cope in this league, which is a much higher standard.”

“John of Shirehampton raises a very good point.
Is this not the perfect opportunity to promote Frankie Artus into the senior squad and give him a shot?”

“The funeral was always going to be in Surinam, nothing dodgy about it at all.

As for Cancelling the loan deal/sending Sno back?

Firstly WHY? he's one of our best midfielders and secondly he's contracted for the season on loan so we would still have to pay if he was sent back, much like we are doing with the injured forward from Rangers.”
