Simon Smart was the main man for Bristol Athletic as they came out 4-3 victors over Nicholas Wanderers in the second round of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup.

Athletic dominated the first half but were run ragged in the second, and Smart was one of the few Wanderers players who played well in both halves.

Like Athletic, Smart was excellent in the first half, he was in control of the midfield. He broke up play well and showed an impressive range of passing. He was outstanding on the ball, showing good close control and confidence. It was a very classy midfield performance.

In the second half Wanderers started to play and were in control of the game. Nevertheless, Smart stood firm and worked tirelessly. He was always on the move and broke up numerous Wanderers attacks. As well as this, Smart was very vocal as he realised the team were greatly under-performing, after such an impressive first 45 minutes. Smart did his best to rally the troops and get them playing. As the Wanderers were battling back, Smart was clearly up for the fight and never gave in.

Smart said: "We had a lot of lads injured for the game today, but we all put in 100 per cent effort. We are a small team and competed well against the aerial onslaught.Congrats to the whole team."

Bristol Athletic's manager, Ricky Newton, said: "He's the same every week, he battles hard, runs all day and is very good technically on the ball."

Undoubtedly, Smart was the key man and became even more vital in the second half, when Athletic had their backs against the wall. He showed good composure and experience to help see his side to victory.
