Site could house an ice rink, too
LIKE all Mayoral candidates I welcome the latest progress towards our arena.
I have a simple question for the arena designers. And Post readers may like to comment, too.
Within the arena complex, would it be possible to incorporate our new ice rink? All the logistics will already be there - transport links, utilities and catering. And the ice rink would attract visitors during the day, at weekends and in the school holidays.
Logic tells me that, as the seats in the arena climb up away from the stage, there will be space underneath. And this space, if well organised, could accommodate our ice rink. A design challenge, I know, but not one that's insurmountable.

I recognise that for some of the larger concert events it would be necessary to close the ice rink early, say around 6.00pm. But a little time table reorganisation could resolve this.
I was disappointed when Unite Accommodation said it was closing our current ice rink. But the city that gave the world the talents of Robin Cousins should not be without a top-class ice rink. Rise to the challenge you arena designers, and lets have our ice rink and Bristol arena built together.

“This is brilliant! The number of people who went to the old ice rink not just to skate, but to do exercise, meet new people and spend most of their lives there is incredible! It's such a shame the old ice rink is gone, but I'm sure the arena will do amazingly well if it has an ice rink, it's exactly what Bristol needs! These plans (if they go ahead) will definitely help to make Bristol a better, more active city, and many people will definitely be behind this idea to try and make it a reality!”

“Thank you, Mr Maggs.
I'm relieved to see that not everyone in Bristol (rink users aside) is totally apathetic to the future of our sport in this city.
I would be very interested to hear our other mayoral candidates views on this subject.”

“Yes, we want and need an ice rink........... You will have thousands supporting this and voting for you if you can deliver! Bristol NEEDS sports facilities and an arena will do so so well! Much need I think!”
