SO, Stephen Williams MP believes that 'You don't get economic growth by slashing people's benefits and restricting their ability to spend money.' (The Post, September 17.)

Mr Williams, pictured, is quite right, but actions speak louder than words and, especially in his case, the silence is deafening. This government has introduced a range of punitive attacks on the low paid and unemployed – cutting tax credits so that some couples would be better off on the dole than in work; introducing a bedroom tax on council tenants with a spare room; and trying to bully, rather than support, ill and disabled people back into work. What we need is a fair and transparent system of benefits and tax credits, a Living Wage for everyone in this city, and fewer crocodile tears from Lib Dem MPs intent on propping up this shabby government.

LIB Dem leader Nick Clegg apologised – not for going back on his party's promise to vote against any increase in student fees, but for making the promise in the first place.

My own Lib Dem MP, Stephen Williams, signed this pledge too, in 2010. Hundreds of students in Bristol believed him and they feel betrayed by Mr Williams and Mr Clegg going back on this promise. They let down our young people, many of whom are now facing a bleak future, with no EMA to help them to stay on at school if their parents are hard up, no job prospects and fears about huge debt if they go to university. No-one forced the Lib Dems to sign this pledge. Will the Bristol West MP now follow his leader and apologise for the promise he made to Bristol's young people?
