Shirehampton starting to emerge as genuine title contenders

IN-FORM Shirehampton enhanced their growing reputation as dark horses for the title by extending their unbeaten run to six games with a 7-1 win at Weston St Johns last weekend, which moved Pete McCall's side up to seventh place with games in hand on the sides above them.

The Penpole Lane-based outfit are still 17 points behind leaders Berrow, but McCall said: "We played really well last weekend and our form in general has been good after a sticky start to the season.

"It was always a case of getting our strongest team out on the pitch and now it is a case of keeping them together and being able to do that week-in-and-week-out."

McCall has suffered a setback after losing central defender Gerard Robinson, who has gone travelling.

The manager is on the look-out for a replacement ahead of tomorrow's clash with Nailsea Town, but is boosted by the return of long-term casualty Rob Sage from a knee injury.

Nailsea Town boss Dave Payne has midfielder Kevin Coleman and Miles Sulleyman, a recent signing from Stockwood Green, back in his squad.

Nailsea United boss Mark Savage welcomes attacking midfielder Matt Long back into his squad for a clash with second-placed Cutters Friday. Lee Cogan is expected to step up from the reserves, but Alex Goodwin has returned to university and is unavailable.

Stockwood Green go to Weston St Johns in a bid to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Nailsea United last weekend.

Manager Paul Beacham is without defender Craig Carter (back), but welcomes Matt Stannard back into the squad following a hamstring injury.

Third-placed Ashton & Backwell bid to extend their ten-match unbeaten league run when they make the short trip to Clevedon United. St George (EiG) visit Odd Down Reserves.
