The harvest festival season came alive for children at Avon Primary School in Shirehampton this year when they celebrated the first crops from their school garden.

Parents, grandparents, children, teachers and governors who have been working on the plot within the school grounds since June, attended the festival in the school hall yesterday.

The children have grown pumpkins, potatoes, marrow, beetroot, carrots, fennel, chard, cucumber, tomato and mint. One class has cooked with the vegetables, while pickles and chutneys have also been created, for sale at the Christmas bazaar.

Head teacher Jane Atkins said: "This garden has brought together a cross section of our community, all working towards creating an exciting environment to help bring learning to life, and to extend our classrooms outside the constraints of four walls."
