A Whitchuch primary school has been paid a visit by the High Sheriff of Bristol.

And the pupils were fascinated by their visitor's strange garb and weaponry.

Dr Tim Chambers visited St Bernadette Primary School in Gladstone Road, Whitchurch, to help pupils celebrate the culmination of its cultural awareness week.

Year 6 teacher Andrew George said: "He chatted to the children about what they had learnt and then did a question-and-answer session with them, because they were fascinated about this man who was wearing tights and carrying a sword."

The High Sheriff's visit was part of the cultural awareness week which saw each year group focus on the varying culture of a particular country.

Mr George said: "We would then have assemblies featuring things like African dancing, Irish dancers or bagpipers."
