Shennie Jaffer appears in court accused of driving death plunge car

A MAN accused of driving a car which crashed off a bridge into the Floating Harbour, killing a 23-year-old woman, has appeared in court.

Shennie Jaffer, 33, from Robertson Road, Easton, appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and drink-driving.

The drink-driving charge relates to an allegation that Jaffer had 76 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when arrested – more than twice the legal driving limit of 35 micrograms.

Jaffer did not enter pleas at the hearing, speaking only to confirm his name and address to the court.

The public gallery was almost full as Jaffer was brought into the court.

Magistrates were told that Ms Whisker died in a BMW car which plunged into the water after crashing off St Philip’s Bridge on Passage Street at 4am on Saturday.

Four other people in the car managed to escape.

Two were taken to hospital for treatment but despite the efforts of specialist teams from Avon Fire and Rescue Service, Ms Whisker could not be saved.

Six police officers who dived into the water in an attempt to rescue the occupants were also taken to hospital, but later released.

Jaffer was arrested after the crash.

After the short hearing Jaffer was remanded in custody, with no application for bail made by his solicitor.

He is due to appear again at Bristol Crown Court next month.

A 21-year-old woman from Bristol who was also arrested in relation to the crash has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.
