Shane Lovatt's superior speed gave him the edge over Jason Hamblin in the North Somerset Club Timed and Observation Trial at Backwell Hill, near Lulsgate, on Sunday.

Apart from the top two, only four others managed to complete seven laps.

Lovatt lost 14 marks in just two sections, the second and the fourth, and Hamblin incurred penalties in four.

Paul Manning matched Hamblin on observation, but the Whitchurch rider took longer to complete the distance.

The Wessex Centre Observation Trial Championship is now wide open after Ricky Wiggins from Yeovil, won the third round incorporated in the West Wilts Club's James Cup event near Bradford-on-Avon on Sunday.

Whilst Valentine's Day affected the entry in other West Country events, more than 60 took part in the four-lap, 15-section battle for points.

Wiggins lost marks in only four sections.

Martin Strang and Brian Shuttleworth finished with equal marks in the Over-50 age class, but with the latter being first to lose marks, Strang was awarded the class win.
