A woman jogger was subjected to a serious sexual assault as she was running in the Clifton Down area of Bristol.

The woman, in her 30s, was on a path leading from Bridge Valley Road, through Clifton Down to the Portway, when she was attacked.

Police said the assault happened at about 6am on Thursday where the path was steep, winding and secluded.

The man who attacked the woman was in his late 20s or early 30s, white and was about 5ft 10ins tall. He had a broad, athletic build and brown hair and was wearing a blue hooded top with the hood up.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the man or the incident to contact Bristol CID on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Mike how do you do it? you manage to twist everything I say around and still harp on about prostitutes and cottagers. How do you know it wasn't one of your own family or friends who committed this awful crime or go cottaging and pick up prostitutes, the answer is simple you don't. So stop projecting your own issues on to me. I wish the victim all the best and hope she will get over her terrible ordeal.”

“It is sad but people like you Marc are the sort of people that stand for election in Government etc. Which explains a great deal. If you think pervs in bushes is fine in a family area which belongs to everyone and for everone to enjoy you are wrong. I would say that the downs needs sorting out it is not a safe area at night and all members of the public be they gay or straight should adhere to a code of conduct in public.”

“Mike I would say it's you that is obsessed with what people get up to on the downs maybe it is me who has hit a nerve? I am not defending criminals I just do not think people should make judgements about what type of person has committed the crime. It easily could have been a local or say somebody who who goes there jogging. Also Mike people who are married with children also commit sex attacks and violence against women and children. It seems people are always looking for scapegoats. To answer your Question Mike no I do not go cottaging do you?. My argument is about your ignorance of the subject and your blame of particular sections of society when you have no evidence. I suggest you get yourself to the university library and start reading some books on the subject of crime and also sexuality. Cheers”

“My comment about it being likely there because of the reasons stated is a valid one. If anyone has an agenda it is you Marc, as you seem very defensive about the area I wonder if I've struck a nerve. As a father and a member of the decent public my concerns over that area and the likelyhood of an incident are important ones. People like you who defend criminals and people that do that in public are criminals makes me vomit. My prayers are with this lady and everyone else who suffers such an awful crime. We need to seek all ways of stopping it happening again. Stopping pervs in bushes I belive may be a start as I suspect this man was not up there playing football at that time.”

“Mike what I was implying was that your comments would be more suitable in a comic like Viz . Your right ,this is a very serious topic but to turn the issue into a totally different subject about cottagers and Prostitutes, makes me think you do not care about what happened to this woman but you just have your own agenda which is obviously about your own predjudices towards certain groups of people. These people may break the law in what they do but it does not make them sex attackers.”

“Mike/Richard (probably the same person). I love your reactionary comments as they have given me my daily dose of laughs. Unfortunately as funny as your comments are, they are not going to help catch a person who as committed a serious sex attack. I would leave the experts to get a character profile of this criminal if I was you.”

“Marc, to be honest I do think a person who seeks this kind of environment for their needs is more likely to attack someone. They're already breaking the law in the face of police and I have to agree strongly with Mike.

The Downs is also one of our best areas in Bristol so if this problem can be moved away then this can only be a good thing.
You wouldn't allow travellers to park a site on the downs so we shouldn't allow perverts to have an area for their enjoyment either. This innocent lady wasn't to know that this area is one of Bristol's most famous perverted areas and people who come to live in our great city don't know this either.
From today there should be zero tollerance to people doing this in flagship areas of our city.”

“I think that by cutting down a few bushes all you are doing is moving the problem on to somewhere else. If you care to look at the history books you will find that cottagers and prostitutes have always been around and are unlikely to disappear in the future. The solution always seems to be to move the problem to another area! sex attacks can happen anywhere, I have known of two people who were sexually assaulted yards from their front doors so how is cutting down a few bushes going to stop muggers and sex attackers. Chop down all bushes, knock down all walls, never go out..... Is that the solution? Can I also add that if one is a prostitute or cruiser of gay sex does that make the person any more likely to be a sex attacker than you or I?”
