A woman was subjected to a sex attack in a Bristol park as she walked home in the early hours of the morning.

Her attacker forced her to the ground in Victoria Park, Windmill Hill, and carried out the assault before fleeing from the scene.

Police said the man was wearing a high-visibility jacket and spoke with an east European accent.

They are hoping the distinctive description means someone in the local community will know who he is and come forward to help with the investigation.

The attack took place between 2.45am and 3am today. Afterwards, the man left the scene in the direction of Windmill Hill.

Detectives said he was white, over 6ft tall, slim and had blond spiky hair. He was thought to be aged between 27 and 34.

Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Woods said: "This was a nasty assault on a woman as she walked home through the park.

"It happened at a time when people would have been heading home after an evening out so it may be that someone witnessed the assault or saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time

"We have a good description of the man and I would encourage anyone who saw him or knows who it may be to contact me.

"This was an isolated incident and I would reassure people that attacks such as these are rare."

“Thoughts are with the girl - no-one deserves anything like this to happen to them.

What I want to know is, there's been quite a few different incidents in this park over the years so it's probably fair to say it has a bit of a reputation, so why hasn't the council got involved? Something as simple as more lighting could be a major deterrent - at the moment, you can hardly see the boundary walls of that park on the road after dark, let alone see into the park!”

“I really feel for the girl and regardless of whether or not they catch the guy, I hope she can get her life back together and not let what he did to her destroy her future.

I can see both points of view. A lot of us take risks walking unaccompanied late at night and I have certainly taken some silly risks in the past but was lucky enough to get away with it. Hopefully some will see this story and make sure they and their friends look after each other.

It is good to see that people haven't started ranting about Eastern Europeans. This guy is a monster and all countries have them.”

“Andrew, cameras are put up for a reason by companies to act as deterent to thieves, councils to stop anti-social behaviour- fights etc, or for traffic purposes. There is no real need for CCTV in parks obviously as although some crimes happens in parks you cant keep an eye on every street and public space to record scum- only the more likely places like city centres outside bars. You know that surely?”

“We live in the most "watched" nation [CCTV] and yet we can't walk home safely at night? Somethings not right.

How many times a day are we caught on camera? Was the attacker invisible or something?”

“interesting comments.. i was attacked in a well light street a few years ago by a drunk male..so where ever you walk there is always a risk of being attacked. I agree that walking through a park in the early hours was not a sensible thing and she should of re thought her route..but you should be able to walk home from a night out, and yes you shouldnt walk home on your own but sometimes situations occur when there is no choice! I hope they catch him soon..my thoughts are with the girl x”

“Hilarious comments by gaz and Donna.
Nobody is suggested she asked for it or deserved it.

I can walk across a road at any time of day and as a pedestrian have right of way, however, common sense tells me not to do it when its risky or dangerous.

I guess common sense isnt that common if you would happily let your loved ones (male or female) walk alone in a park at 3am.”

“Hi GingerRog, long time no type! You ok me babber?
Ron, random statements pulled from nowhere? Sexual attacks are LOWER than used to be. At least reported ones- which are the ones you would hear about in the media. So no, they havent gone up recently. Also I am sure Spain has their fair share of rapists. Its not an English thing Ron!! I am sure most Spanish women do not take walks alone in parks at 3am. You may get foreign women doing that in Spain because for some reason when most people go away on holiday their fear levels drop as they relax. look as Madeline McCann. I doubt her parents would have left her alone in the house in the UK to go to a restaurant around the corner with friends even though it is probably safer. (not critising them or diverting the thread- its just well known people act differently on holiday).”

“While i sort of understand why some people are talking about using common sense and not walking alone at 3am it still is disgusting that you have to take precautions like this - go to a lot of places abroad and you are perfectly safe, i was in Madrid a coupe of years ago and young girls could safely walk home alone at late times and that's not the only safe place to do this.
A sad indictment of this country.
Also very worrying are the amount of sex assaults recently.”
