Player ratings from the British and Irish Lions 37-25 victory over a Royal XV.

LEE BYRNE: The Lions' most creative back, whose second-half try gave them hope of staging a successful fightback. 7/10

TOMMY BOWE: Scored the Lions' opening try, but it was a mixed bag of a performance from the Irish Grand Slam wing. 6

KEITH EARLS: Had a Lions debut to forget, making several errors. His frustration was visible. 4

JAMIE ROBERTS: A powerful contribution from the strong-running Wales centre. Solid performance. 6

SHANE WILLIAMS: Tried to spark the Lions into life at regular intervals, but too much of his invention went to waste. 6

RONAN O'GARA: Scored 22 points, kicking immaculately and offering a calming presence at fly-half. 7

MIKE BLAIR: Had a kick charged down in the opening minute, and struggled to make consistent headway. 5

ANDREW SHERIDAN: Made a couple of trademark charges, but drifted in and out of the game. 5

MATTHEW REES: Would hope to have made a bigger impact after being handed a starting role in game one. 5

ADAM JONES: Caused all kinds of problems for the Royal XV at scrum-time, which gave the Lions supremacy in that area. 6

SIMON SHAW: Not one of the Wasps and England lock's better days. He will be disappointed. 5

PAUL O'CONNELL: Rallied his team strongly in the second-half, and was a major presence in the loose for a side that needed his leadership. 7

JOE WORSLEY: Anonymous for a lot of the game. Did not make the impact he would have desired. 5

MARTYN WILLIAMS: Grew into the game – far more effective in the second-half than he had been in the first. 6

DAVID WALLACE: A late replacement for an injured Andy Powell. Had one of his quieter matches during what has been an outstanding season. 5

Replacements

Phil Vickery: Went on for Adam Jones after 65 minutes. 5

Alun-Wyn Jones: Scored a vital late try as the Lions got out of jail. 6

Jamie Heaslip: Worked hard during his 15 minutes of action. 6

Mike Phillips: Offered more of a scrum-half threat than Blair. 6

Riki Flutey: Should have gone on for the struggling Earls sooner than the 66th minute. 6

Lee Mears: Had a late run instead of Rees. 5
