NORTH Somerset Council is to axe tax discounts for owners of second homes and cut them for empty houses undergoing major repair and vacant dwellings.

The authority, which is trying to save £47 million from its budgets over four years, believes the move will generate an extra £300,000 in council tax income from April.

There are about 2,500 empty properties across the district.
