Search For A Star talent contest at Keynsham's Fry Club begins

SIX performers have won through from the first heat in this year's Search for a Star talent contest.

They took part in the opening round of the competition at The Fry Club in Keynsham and will now battle at the semi-finals for a place in the final on Sunday, May 19.

Among the winners were Amber Pollard, 14, from Keynsham who attends Wellsway School and sang Valerie written by Mark Ronson and memorably performed by Amy Winehouse, and Use Somebody by Kings of Lyon.

Amber, who has competed in the Junior Search for a Star contest, said: "It was a lot tougher than the junior competition but I really enjoyed it."

Sophie Allen, 16, from St George, is a pupil at Bristol Brunel Academy who sang a song by Adele, I Can't Make You Love Me and Skinny Love by Birdy.

"I can't believe I got through," she said. "I had a great time."

Harley Marsh, 15, is a body-popping freestyle dancer who won through to the semi-finals last year and came third in the junior contest two years ago.

He said: "It was good fun. I've got a routine but I like to dance freestyle."

Joe Probert, 16, is a singer from Warmley who attends Sir Bernard Lovell School who was taking part in the competition for a second time.

"This is the first time I got through from the heat," he said. "I didn't expect to do that."

Shannon Kitchen, 15, a singer from Warmley who attends St Gregory's RC Secondary School, sang Someone Like You by Adele and I Dreamed A Dream from the musical, Les Miserables.

Shannon said she took part in a school production of Les Mis which inspired her to enter the competition for the first time. "I loved it," she said.

Emily Heskins, 15, from Fairford in Gloucestershire, is a singer/guitarist who won through to the semi-finals last year but could not take part because she was poorly.

She said: "I was really disappointed last year but it was really great to perform this time. I really enjoyed it."

The other contestants taking part in the first heat were: Izzie Priest and Jack Pentland (Acoustic Two); Anna Mulvihill; Amiana Scott-Phillips; Sarah-Jayne Steele; and Rob Pollard.

Organiser Debbie Dyer said: "This year's contest took off with a flying start in the first heat. The talent on show gave the judge's a hard time to make a decision."
