Eight more acts have been chosen to take part in the grand final of the 2009 Evening Post Fry Club Search For A Star competition.

At the third and last semi-final last night the following performers were picked from 14 contestants: Last Orderz, Jade Wilkinson, Sarah Waddington, Helen Marles, Kirsty Clinch, Kate Harris, Holly Byrd and Georgie Coles.

First on stage was Jade Wilkinson, 16, from Swindon who gave powerful performances of Whitney Houston's Run to You and Stand Up for Love by Destiny's Child.

Jade said afterwards: "It was nerve-wracking. All the other performers were great."

Helen Marles, 17, from Trowbridge, appeared with a puppet to give a professional performance of A Fine, Fine Line, from puppet-themed musical Avenue Q. Her second tune was the Broadway song Easy Money.

She said: "I've taken part in the competition for three years. I am so pleased to get through to the final."

Singer-guitarist Alan Green, 18, from Easton-in-Gordano, sang two of his own compositions, Flying Solo and the poignant Their Dreams, about children leaving home.

Mark Stacey, 25, from Hengrove, manages a plumbing firm by day and at night is an entertainer on the pub and club circuit.

He sang the romantic ballad Amazed and then got the audience clapping and singing along to Rod Stewart's Maggie May.

Last Orderz were the only band in the third semi-final.

The lads – drummer Alex Elvin, 17, singer and guitarist Jack Riddiford, 17, guitarist Tom Smith, 18, and bass player Nick Townley, 18, – are from south Bristol and won a Battle of the Bands competition last year.

They won deserved cheers from the audience for their performance of Elaine from their EP and a new song, Where Do We Run.

Nick said: "Obviously we are very happy to get through to the final."

Sarah Waddington, 16, from Orchard Vale, Kingswood, sang songs she wrote and also accompanied herself on guitar and then piano. She said: "I didn't really think I would get through."

Kerri Snow, 18, from Filton, sang Natural Woman and Angel.

Sasha Brown, 21, from Downend, sang Saving All My Love For You by Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys' If I Ain't Got You.

Kate Harris, 18, from Chepstow, who is in her final year at Wyedean Sixth Form College, sang It is You and Seasons of Love.

She said: "It's the first time I've got through."

Georgie Coles, 16, from Longwell Green, who was a finalist last year chose the popular I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker by Sandi Thom and A Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q. She said: "I felt a lot better about performing this year. I really enjoyed myself."

Charlotte Day, 19, from Bath, sang Here I Am by Leona Lewis and You Might Need Somebody by Shola Ama.

Holly Byrd, 20, from Rodway Road, Mangotsfield, who works as an optical assistant at Vision Express, sang My Immortal by Evanescence and A Summer in Ohio.

She said: "It was good fun. I had a lot of support from my friends and family."

Kirsty Clinch, 20, sang This Little Place about her hometown Westbury in Wiltshire and A and E.

She said: "I felt like I had a frog in my throat for the first song."

Charli Parsons, 16, from Moreton-in-Marsh, was last to perform with There Are Worse Things from the musical Grease and You've Got Away.

The Grand Final will be on Sunday, May 17. Tickets will cost £6 for adults and £3 for children but will not be available on the night.

“I do agree with simon to a degree, but i do believe the majority of the acts put through on this heat and the last 2 semi finals have all been similar, there is no variaty for a good paying audience and talking to some other independent punters at frys club on sunday, who have attended every heat and spend good money there, have said they dont beleive the judging has been done fairly. obviously i would of liked to of got through, but i'm not bitter about it and please don't think i am by writing thism i have other projects to focus on in the future. the one thing i do agree with is that last orderz were fantastic, what a nice bunch of guys (hope they win) as for the rest apart from a couple of others in the compitition there was a lot of arrogance amoungst other contestants with quite frankly i think is pathetic. it's only a compitition”

“Well, you can't plase all the people all of the time.
Reading the comments below, and understanding that 95%+ of those at The Fry club were related to or friends of the performers it's no shock that those not getting through will have some degree of disgruntled support.
We all have different taste in music and the judges will have their own views. They did put 8 through so clearly had some difficulty in deciding on the finalists.
The band Last Orderz were really good and well polished for 17 / 18-year olds.
Kirsty Clinch was quite simply superb with her version of A&E.
Alan Green really deserved to go through in my opinion and I'm sorry for him. His second song was brilliant but although technically good, his choice of first song probably lt him down as not being quite so melodic.
Sarah Wadington did well and in difficult circumstances when her microphone didn't get switched on for the second song; for 16 she kept her cool well and ploughed on in the face of the problems.
I agree with the comments below that some of the theatrical / musical 'stage performer' aspects are less appealling to most and that audience rapport is important but those above had clear talent above just being able to sing. Playing their own songs, own instruments and singing. Having a good voice is great but there was little to choose between those singing to backing tracks so some had to loose out.”

“sorry, but i think your wrong as only a couple of the girls had actually wrote thare own songs. what about the young lad on the guitar? he wrote his own music and didn't get through. as for mark, he could sing and he was confident that got the crowd going...if writing your own music should be a high factor on getting through then it should be stated, because the ones who didn't get through who in my opinion should of, was not given a fair compition! fair play if you can write your own music, but some of those girls, without wishing to be rude. were quite boring...”

“Having read the comments, I agree to a certain extent that there was a couple of better ones that should have gone through. but I dont agree with Mark comments about young girls, it should be a high factor that the acts write there own songs. I think that is part of searching for a star, not just someone who can sing, but who can also write. After all its a search for star comp not a copy artist.”

“Having read the comments, I would like to agree with them. In my opinion and in that of other people I have spoken to who were there, most of the acts picked (apart from three) were not of the best talent of the night, especially in the girl solo singers chosen. I can think of at least two other girl solo singers who had much stronger, soulful voices, who should have been chosen for the final, and I really feel for them. I hope they realise that they were much better. On a good note well done to Last Orderz, I hope you win.”

“just reading Marks comment and i totally agree with him. I think there were far more better acts that didn't go through than the ones that did! out of the 8 that went through i think three deserved it, thats including the band (last orederz). i'm not sure what the judges were looking for but i don't think the judges gave full consideration to the entertainment value. in my opinion, most the girls that went through sounded the same and i was rather bored particularly when one song was sang twice! i think both the male entertainers Mark Stacey and Alan Green outshone most of the finalists, most people i have spoke to about it was quite dissapointed”

“i would like to say i was in this heat myself and i felt the judges were not paticarly fair, there was no varity in what they put through, i'm not doubting all 14 of the acts were good in there own rights. but i dont agree that the 8 they picked to go through were the best. they need to take into account how acts read the audience and the audiences reaction to what they are doing. it seems as though they are only looking for either a young girl singer or someone that writes there own stuff, not paticuarly fair in my opinion.”

“If i'm honest i was dissapointed that there was no variety within the 8 chosen, near enough every contestant had a trained musical background. There wasnt enough raw talent, for example Sasha, who was pure soul & not pretending to be a character from a musical. quite frankly i dont think the choices were open minded enough. i hope we see more of an embrace to those who have music in their hearts next year!”
