Sea cadets show off their skills
Sea cadets from Bristol will demonstrate their skills next week as part of an inspection by the Royal Navy.
The biannual inspection of the training, equipment and premises at training ship Enterprise Bristol and the Avonmouth unit, will take place on May 11 at the unit headquarters in Station Road, Shirehampton.
Lieutenant Barbara Hillier, commanding officer of the unit, said: "This event is important to the cadets as it is the culmination of two years' hard work and gives them a chance to demonstrate what they have learned.
"It also gives the unit the opportunity to retain our Burgee Award, which we achieved in 2007 and 2008, indicating that we are a top performing squadron.
"This year's Royal Navy Presentation is particularly significant as it will be the first inspection of the premises and personnel by the new sea cadets south west area officer, commander Martyn Skeer, who is in charge of all the units in the region."
The presentation will include a demonstration from cadets on what they have learned about "replenishment at sea" procedures on ships from the 18th century to the present day.
There will also be a first aid demonstration assisted by Avon and Somerset Police and Avon Fire and Rescue Service.
Training ship Enterprise Bristol and Avonmouth Sea Cadets is a 32-strong unit of youngsters aged from 10 to 18.
Founded in 1943, the unit provides opportunities for young people in Bristol and North Somerset to take part in adventure training and life-skills activities, as well as gain qualifications.
Barbara added: "The cadets from our unit have a very good reputation in the area for being polite and courteous young people who are up for anything.
"We meet every Monday and Thursday evening at our headquarters, and I would encourage any young people who are interested to come along on one of these nights to see what we do."
Prospective cadets are invited to attend the presentation and they should be accompanied by an adult. There will be an opportunity to view the unit at 6.30pm, with the demonstrations beginning at 7pm.
