TEENAGE girls on a school expedition alerted the emergency services when they became surrounded by a herd of cows and bulls in a field near Compton Dando.

The group of six girls, aged between 14 and 16 and from Mangotsfield School, became worried about their safety when they were confronted by the animals in a field off Bathford Hill.

They were visiting the area as part of a Duke of Edinburgh Awards practice expedition.

The girls dialled 999 when they were unable to contact their school teachers as they had no mobile phone signal.

“My wife and I dressed up as a bull and a cow for a fancy dress competition in Compton Dando. We had a lot to drink so walked home across a field, a bull noticed us and started to approach, my wife asked what should we do, I answered, "I'm going to start grazing, you had better brace yourself".”

“It is comical when a herd starts to follow you. You start walking faster and they start walking faster, you start running and they start running. A bit unnerving, but that's about it. Bulls are normally kept in small enclosures on their own I believe.

Only time it can be dangerous is when young are involved, about the only time you'll see a cow stand its ground.”

“Doesn't this just demonstrate how out of touch with the countryside a lot of young people are these days.Jumping over the hedge was probably more dangerous than the cows !”

“I very much doubt that there was even a single bull, and if there were "bulls" plural, they'd have been fighting each other, not a bunch of schoolgirls.

As Mikey_Blake said, a loud "BOO" woould have done the trick.”

“Cows are just curious animals. I very much doubt if there were any "bulls" there. (Bad Reporting)
If the girls had just leaped up all together and waved their arms, the cows would have fled quicker than you can say "Supercalifridilisticexpialidiocious"”
