HIGH standards among pupils and good teaching have been highlighted in a report on Elm Park Primary School in Winterbourne.

Inspectors from Ofsted said children achieved standards that were well above the national average in all subjects.

The curriculum and lessons were lively and carefully planned, with staff using a good range of methods to engage the youngsters, no matter what their abilities.

They also said most pupils thoroughly enjoyed school and their learning.

Inspector Mo Roberts said: "Academic guidance for all pupils is exceptionally strong. As a result, pupils are clear what they need to do next to improve their work and to meet their challenging targets.

"Teaching is good. Staff have successfully addressed the minor weakness they had identified in the quality of pupils' working. The pupils are rightly proud of their writing assessment books and their faster progress this year is clearly evident.

"A very good learning atmosphere and a high standard of behaviour are evident in all classes. However, a small number of pupils do not continue this goodwill outside of lessons."

She said a small amount of unkindness occurred but with extra training for lunchtime staff, pupils who were kind and thoughtful were being rewarded.

The inspectors also praised a well-run breakfast club and the high level of school and local activities which benefited the pupils.

New head teacher Beth Alway and her "dynamic leadership team" were recognised for their shared vision and drive, while the level of individual care, guidance and support to pupils was "outstanding".

The report also praised the reception classes, where children were "extremely well cared for" and where teaching was of a high quality.

Ms Alway said: "I would like to thank pupils, parents and carers, staff and governors for their continued support and look forward to building on the many strengths celebrated within the report."

Jeff Baldwin, the chairman of governors, said: "I'm really proud that our school has achieved such a good report, with several areas noted as 'outstanding'. I'm particularly pleased that we've been recognised for giving our youngest children an excellent start to their school years.

"The report is a credit to our children, their parents and carers, staff and governors, and shows we're in a strong position to improve even further."
