School pledge from Lib Dems
Bristol's Liberal Democrats have pledged to build a new primary school, provide strong leadership and hand more power to communities after taking outright control of the city council.
The party won an overall majority after taking four seats from Labour, who also lost four wards to the Tories in a disastrous performance in this year's local elections that left the once-dominant force in Bristol politics in third place after all the votes were counted yesterday.
The Lib Dems have also repeated their pledge to scrap plans for a new waste incinerator and vowed to fight plans for housing in the green belt.
National party leader Nick Clegg visited the new councillors and their colleagues to congratulate them and declare the capture of the Council House part of a "very important transformation in British politics".
He said Bristol was now joining the "vast majority" of big cities outside London in being run by Lib Dems, including Sheffield, Liverpool, Hull and Newcastle.
The new school would be at Ashley Down, part of the area worst-hit by a primary school places shortage this year.

“Thats right Michael. They shut down an unprofitable swimming pool kept open at taxpayers expense so vote for a bunch of skinhead fascists. How your brain processes information is a bit bizarre. Get back down the pub. If people actually bothered to use your pool then it would be open. If people bothered to vote then maybe the result may have been different. The fact remains people can change anything but most are either too apethetic or just pathetic to do something about it.”

“Ali, I might be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that the law says that the government can't set up transport if it would compete with a private service? I'm no expert though - could be totally wrong!”

“I'd like to see them take control over the bus service supplied by First Bus! I'm sure that will win more votes and confidence from the citizens of Bristol and surrounding areas.”
