A PARANOID schizophrenic with a history of violence stabbed a man to death with a samurai sword before walking into a police station and confessing, a court heard.

Marc Carter cut his victim Gino Nelmes 18 times – including stabbing him through the heart, liver and spleen – after sharing a bottle of cider with Mr Nelmes and another man.

All three were residents of a property in Filton Avenue, Horfield, registered to Keystone Mental Health Services, which provides accommodation and care to adults with mental health needs. Carter had been an in-patient at Fromeside secure hospital until just a few days before he attacked Mr Nelmes in March this year.

Prosecutor Ian Pringle QC said it was deemed appropriate by those responsible for Carter's care that he was "placed back in the community".

But a fellow resident raised the alarm at around 4.30pm on Saturday, March 17, when he said there was "something wrong with Gino".

This was only a short time after a Keystone director had visited the premises earlier that afternoon. Everything was said to have been "fine", with Carter having said hello to the director. Mr Pringle said: "He (Mr Nelmes) was found on the floor of the lounge, covered in blood, slash marks to his hands and wrists."

They were, Bristol Crown Court was told, consistent with injuries sustained while trying to defend himself. Emergency services were called, by which time Carter, 46, had already visited a friend in another part of the city and confessed to being responsible for the death.

Mr Pringle said: "There, to his friend, he admitted he just attacked somebody 'pretty badly' with a sword. At 6.15pm, Carter arrived at Trinity Road police station and stated to the lady present: 'I've just stabbed someone with a knife'.

"He told them the sword was in his bedroom. A short samurai sword was found in his bedroom, bloodstained, with his fingerprints on the handle."

Mr Pringle said there were no witnesses to the incident, and that Mr Nelmes was pronounced dead at 6.20pm, at Bristol Royal Infirmary. A post-mortem examination showed that he died from blood loss caused by multiple stab wounds.

The court heard Carter has been a paranoid schizophrenic "for many years".

Mr Pringle added: "He (Carter) hears voices, thinks people are reading his mind and on occasions reacts violently to that."

His previous convictions include several for violence, dating back to 1984. They include assault, battery and wounding.

Carter admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Recorder Judge Neil Ford said Carter had been made the subject of a hospital order three times in the past. Sentencing was deferred for further medical evidence and Carter was remanded into custody.

“I agree with pongo T clown, marc was on 2 week trial leave from the pressure of his team, these support homes are privately run money making machines. There's two victims here. Marcs fellow resident who lost his life and my friend marc who was failed by the system. Don't be narrow minded and believe all the bad stuff about marc. This was care in the community on the cheap. Yes this message could open up a can of worms . I say it how it is.”

“But why no mention of AVON & WILTSHIRE MENTAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP ?? who run the secure Fromeside Unit ??? A paranoid schizophrenic with a history of violence - having just been released from Fromeside - was he on strong prescribed medication , I would think so ?? So he is released into the property ' registered to ( managed by ? ) Keystone Mental Health Services - funded by AVON & WILTSHIRE MENTAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP ?? Spent the day drinking umm does anybody at the Filton Avenue house MANAGE OR SUPERVISE these mentally ill patients upon release from Hospital ?? And who in their right minds allows this patient to have ready access to a sumarai sword ?? Yet another death due to the 10 years of repeated failings on the part of mental health service providers in our area - shame AWP dont keep a publicly available count of those who have died year after year over a ten years period now on their 'well spun' new website - if only the truth were known !! and if only our local press would report the WHOLE truth !”

“I agree with Pogo - it is very easy in hindsight to say he should have been locked away in an asylum forever. But for every person who is released and goes on to commit a serious crime or murder, there are hundreds who go on to lead very normal, happy lives. We can't lock everyone up who poses a tiny risk to the public forever.”

“A lot of "uncare in the community" down to lack of resources.”

“He might well have been 'mental' but also had spent the day drinking as well.

It would be interesting to see how much abusing alcohol played a part in Mr Carters criminal history.

It is dangerous enough having violent paranoid schizophrenic's wandering the street without the appropriate supervision or controls, but adding alcohol into the equation is simply throwing more fuel on the fire.

In all honesty he should be banged up no only for his own good, but for everyone else's.

He is a violent murderer, simple as that.”

“It's just not that simple. There are guidelines in place to judge what level of risk someone poses. No one is ever risk free, especially people who are not always in control of themselves and it's unfortunate that the system will sometimes get things wrong.

Now, you may think "Well in this case, they should've been more stringent!". Well, are you sure? How much of the case do we know? Are we trained mental health experts? All we have is the benefit of hindsight, a benefit which is now shared by people with training and experience. We need to reply on them to properly judge what has happened and make appropriate decisions.

This is a tragedy but let's not just use it as an excuse to say "Ooh, you didn't want to do that!" to people who know the situation better than we do.”

“Whoever decided that Carter was fit to be returned to society has blood on their hands. These people are paid to make decisions and have clearly failed. The fact is that he could have attacked and killed anyone. Society, as well as other residents of these homes, need protection.”
