Scaredy cat at the pantomime
WHEN I was three years old in 1940, my mother and I went to see the pantomime of Puss-in-Boots. Just before the interval the cat (obviously a large man in a cat suit) came by my seat in the third row and put its paw on my shoulder. I was so scared I hid under my seat and stayed there throughout the entire performance.
The next memory was in the 1950s when Tommy Steele was playing one of his many gigs. My friends and I waited after the performance outside the stage door at the back alley of the Hippodrome to see if he would come out to see his many fans and we were awarded when he came to an upstairs window, waved and blew us a kiss. We couldn't sleep that night!
The most memorable show I remember was on Boxing Day in the 90s when Beauty and the Beast was on. The costumes and music and performers were second to none, it really made my Christmas.
The saddest time was on April 16 1960 when my boyfriend (now my husband) and I went to see rock star Eddie Cochran. It was a marvellous performance but the next day we heard he had died in an horrific car crash on his way home. We couldn't believe we had only been at the Hippodrome watching him the evening before.

I hope the generation growing up now will appreciate the Hippodrome as much as my generation have.
Here's to another 100 years.
