Samantha Suriyarachi is Evening Post cricketer of the week
Bristol Sri Lankans all-rounder Samantha Suriyarachi has been named the Evening Post cricketer of the week – despite failing to make it into the Top 30.
Suriyachi, 38, recorded impressive figures with both bat and ball to help the Sri Lankans secure victory over Bradley Stoke in Bristol and District Division 1 (1st XI).
He opened the batting and top-scored with 94 before the Sri Lankans were skittled all out for 234.
Suriyachi's 94 took him to more than 500 runs for the season – but came up one run short for inclusion in the Evening Post's Top 15 batsman. His heroics with the ball when leading the bowling attack, however, capped an outstanding performance and earned him this week's honours.
The medium/fast bowler took 5-41 to help the Sri Lankans restrict Bradley Stoke to 216-7 and secure a much-needed 18-run victory.
"Samantha has played for us for years and has always been a consistent performer," said Bristol Sri Lankans skipper Torington Fernando.
"He is a very good opening batsman and has managed to get over 500 runs for us this season and has also done well with the ball.
"Some of our bowlers have been unable to play this season, due to work commitments, so Samantha has been leading the bowling attack as well.
"We were really pleased with him on Saturday and it was a really good display by the whole team that helped us get the win against Bradley Stoke."
