STAR MATCH: Sam steals the show for Bradley Stoke
Winterbourne United 1 Bradley Stoke United 4
Bradley Stoke United made it two wins out of two with a comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory over Winterbourne.
A tight first game ended 1-1, with Bradley Stoke keeper Sam Maunder making several super saves, but the visitors roared to a 3-0 victory in the second encounter.
Bradley Stoke signalled their intentions from the start of game one by forcing Liam Fitzpatrick into an early save after the Winterbourne defence failed to deal with a throw into the box. This presented Edward Bartley with a chance at the back post, but his shot was expertly blocked by Fitzpatrick.
Five minutes later, Enzo Steenkamp's corner was cleared only as far as Sam Cottle, who released a thunderous strike which beat the keeper. Fortunately for Winterbourne, Dominic Jewell was on hand to block the ball on the goal-line at the expense of another corner.
Winterbourne looked dangerous on the counter-attack and almost took the lead on 13 minutes through George Hanham. Ben Parker put the talented striker in behind the Bradley Stoke defence, but keeper Maunder pulled off a magnificent save.
A few minutes later, Maunder pulled off another brilliant stop to keep out Hanham again.
The second half started with a goalmouth scramble, in which Maunder again proved himself the hero to preventing the hosts from going in front. But there was nothing that he could do three minutes later when Winterbourne took the lead as Bradley Stoke paid the price for leaving themselves exposed at the back as they push forward.
Parker was able to race clear down the left unopposed to slide in the unmarked Kieran Slade, who guided the ball over Maunder.
After the breakthrough the game became frenetic, with both teams taking turns to attack. Bradley Stoke missed a great opportunity when Adam Wolley faked a shot and fooled the keeper into diving, leaving him with an empty net, but he sliced his shot wide.
The equaliser finally arrived 14 minutes into the second half when Steenkamp, one-on-one with the last defender, unselfishly squared the ball to Kieran Clayton, who finished in style.
Shortly afterwards, Adam Pearce's superb defending enabled the home side to launch an attack and Hanham fired in another testing shot, which the impressive Maunder saved well. It looked certain that an incoming Winterbourne player would capitalise on the rebound, until Cottle came flying in with a last-ditch sliding tackle, nicking the ball off the toes of his opponent.
Neither side could engineer a late winner so an exciting and evenly- matched first game ended 1-1.
Bradley Stoke started the second game brightly and, within three minutes, they took the lead through Luis Hares after great play from Declan Mannion.
Hares had three more chances in quick succession to double his tally, the best of them when he rounded the keeper. But his touch was too heavy, forcing him wide, and he was unable to get in a shot at goal.
Winterbourne's first chance came 11 minutes in when Alen Fitzgerald attempted to divert a team-mate's shot around Lewis Preston, but the keeper's reactions were quick enough for him to make the save.
A minute later, Winterbourne cleared a corner only as far as Sam Austin, who cracked in a powerful shot from distance which keeper Aaron Prewett bravely blocked.
Prewett's opposite number Preston then made two fantastic flying saves from long-range efforts from Thomas Parker and Kieran Jackson respectively.
The red and blacks' overwhelming pressure eventually resulted in them grabbing their second goal. Ironically, it came when the unfortunate Prewett, who had been having a good game, pushed the ball into his own net from a corner.
With five minutes left, Jackson forced a good save from Preston with a long-range effort, while at the other end Benny Jones struck the underside of the bar for Bradley Stoke.
Eventually, Mannion displayed the first bit of quality in front of goal since Hares' opening goal when he broke from the halfway line into the box before tucking the ball into the bottom corner to seal a 3-0 win for his team.
