Sainsbury's supermarket at Rovers' ground recommended for approval
Councillors are being urged to give the go-ahead for a Sainsbury's supermarket at Bristol Rovers' ground in Horfield.
But if approval is given, the plan will be put before the Secretary of State for a final decision.

The recommendation opens the door to the football club moving to a new £40 million stadium in Stoke Gifford.
The club cannot afford a new home without the Sainsbury's money to help fund the move.

Valid until: Monday, May 27 2013
Councillors will meet at 6pm in City Hall next Wednesday to discuss the decision.
The club has entered into a unique partnership with the University of the West of England to build the new stadium.
It would be sited on land near the MoD procurement base at Abbeywood.
In July last year, South Gloucestershire Council approved plans for the stadium subject to conditions.

“113, spot on about the stuff around a rugby match. I think Bristol have to very careful. If you were a group of unattrached rugby fans, would it be a drive up the M32 to a soulless edge of city ring road stadium followed by a congested drive back. Or a trip on the train, with a beer or two, a match, meal and a few drinks in all within walking distance in B**h?All the most atmospheric rugby grounds are part of their town/city.
I would rather watch Dings than go to a soul-less stadium on the ring road.”

“The parking is for everyone and they are going to run a free shuttle bus to go ouster road, housing is included as well. Plus money is being paid to the local businesses. People don't look into all the benefits and think it is just a supermarket, it's more than that.”

“ps - when I go to the football or rugby I like to have a few pints around horfield and gloucester road. forget that if its at UWE. I will have to drive, no pubs, no beers, traffic all the way. I wont be going - hopefully the rugby might move to ashton gate.”

“We need housing!
I think sainsbury needs to be half the size or smaller with housing/ mixed use and units for smaller businesses. the parking should be for all who want to use Gloucester road and not solely for sainburys. I feel sorry for any commuters who drive around this area; its already bad and is going to get much worse.
I don't this is going to kill gloucester road's shops - it will kill the traffic flow though. Gasheads will have a new stadium but If you are from horfield you will struggle to get there on match day.”

“Darlington have 3 teams with bigger grounds within a short distance so they were never going to get bigger. Swansea, reading, stoke etc all got bigger once they got their new ground. How big an area is Bristol and how big is the uni? Darlington is nothing like our project and if a new ground does not make a difference, why do you want one? Good news today for Rovers, to early to get excited yet though.”

“Blueface for every Swansea there is a Darlington. A New Stadium guarantees you nothing especially with a Chairman who knows nothing about football.”
