Sainsbury's is to open a new shop in Bristol city centre.

Work will start on transforming a former clothes shop at 1-3 Broadmead next week and the company hopes the new 'local' convenience store will be complete early in the new year.

It will not be a full-size supermarket but a 211sq m (2,276 sq ft) shop selling a range of fresh food, food-to-go products and health and beauty items.

There will be an in-store bakery serving breakfast and lunch, a hot food counter and a salad bar.

The store, which will also have self-service checkouts, will employ about 20 people.

Stephen Boyce, head of property convenience for Sainsbury's said: "We look forward to opening our new store at Bristol Broadmead and bringing the Sainsbury's fresh food offer to the area in a convenient and modern store.

"Jobs will be created for the local community and as soon as our plans are in place we'll confirm the number of positions and start our recruitment activities.

"Playing an active part in local communities has ensured Sainsbury's has been around for 140 years and throughout the refurbishment we will work with local representatives to ensure our contribution to Bristol continues to be a positive one."

Sainsbury's now has more than 300 convenience stores and plans to open another 150 by 2011.

New 'Locals', as the company has branded them, have recently opened in Edinburgh, London, Cheshire and Bradford.

The supermarket chain will open its first environmentally-friendly convenience store in the new Southgate shopping centre in Bath early next month.

The 278sq m (3,000 sq ft) store's green credentials include low-carbon building materials and low-energy heating and lighting as well as a water usage reduction system.

    “Mrs Dixon,
I live about 3 minutes (walk) away from cabot circus in a flat, and I do not have a car. To get to the Bishopston branch I would have to get a bus - it would take longer to walk. It's like saying that you shouldn't have a natwest branch in Broadmead becasue there is one in Bishopston.
Are you honestly saying that if you are going to be in Broadmead for whatever reason, you will think, oh, I will boycott the city centre branch even though I have to get all the way to Bishopston.

Now I would understand what you are saying if bishopston was closing down, but no-one has said that. I recommend that you continue using Bishopston, and people like me will use the city centre.

Plus for everyone else, I hope they open 7-11 like the one at Bishopston, which will mean they will get trade when Tesco closes at 10pm, and 5pm on a Sunday.”

“Yes, they should move into the old M&S site at the Harbourside. It was real shame when they left, we need somewhere down there to get sandwiches without traipsing to town.”

    “Brilliant news!
I wonder if they could open one at the Harbourside as well? It would be great for the residents of the flats and the office workers.”

“Dear Alex, I think you're being a very silly little girl ! But don't worry, I won't be going to the new Sainsbury's in town because:
    1) it's a real faff to get to (which was my point all along !).
    2) you don't want me to.”
