ATHLETICS: Tom Russell is aiming for a hat-trick of victories in the British Milers Club Cross Country Championships next weekend.

The Bristol Downs again hosts the popular event, which also incorporates the Mike Sully Trophy and Gemma Butler Bowl and a top class entry has already registered.

Among Russell's rivals will be Wells City Harrier Ben Tickner, who beat him to win the Gwent League last weekend, Gateshead junior international Ryan Mcleod, South West champion Kevin Heywood and Clevedon's former international 1,500metres runner James Thie.

● Hogweed Trotters had a huge presence in the Easy Runner Sodbury Slog, with over 60 club members taking part.

Pride of place went to Will Gray, who finished top Trotter in 11th overall, and first veteran over 40, while Peter Willoughby won the Over-60s prize. Also, it was good to see Justin Littlechild back in action after recovering from a serious accident.

● Bristol club Town & Country Harriers, renowned for their off-road exploits, have linked up with the Avon Centre for the Disabled to promote a new trail race in the city.

The Moorland 10k Community Challenge will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2010 (11am), from the Avon Riding Centre on Kings Weston Road, Henbury.

The course will take runners through Moorgrove Wood and Lawrence Weston Moor and will include paths, trials, mud and tarmac.

● Clevedon AC runner Julian Emery, who will be running for England in the British Masters Cross Country Championships, in Birmingham this weekend, has set up a new part-time business as a personal running trainer.

Emery, who boasts a wealth of experience from a lifetime in the sport, with Westbury Harriers and Clevedon, is offering to assist people who wish to lose weight or are seeking to improve their personal bests.

● Great Western Runners' Ben Morley started the year with a personal best of 77mins 58secs in the Sheffield half marathon, which then improved to 73:40 in the Bristol half, before shaving another 14 seconds off when winning the Cheddar half in 73:26 last weekend.

"Ben keeps doing PBs and I'm only taking things steady with him at the moment," said coach Mike Hockett.

● Patrick Foley was Portishead Running Club's top performer in the Slog, finishing 12th overall, while Matt Crocker also made the top 100 in 75th. PRC: 769 Linda Foley 1:51:23; 908 Richard Nuell 2:02:41.

● Clevedon AC's Simon Hancock finished third in the latest Burnham-on-Sea Winter 5k road race.

Burnham-on-Sea Winter 5k – men: 1 Kevin Crenol (Burnham, M40) 17:22; 2 Martin Rogers (West Country Tri, M40) 17:52; 3 Simon Hancock (Clevedon) 18:12. M50; Dickie Wythe (Wells) 18:29.

Women: 1 Alice Hector (Wells) 18:55; 2 Celia Miall (West Country Tri, W35) 20:12; 3 Katrina Prior (Wells, W35) 21:05. 60 finishers.
