Runner-up Whitehall Printing
THE world of printing has changed dramatically since William Bonny set up his press in 1702 and published the Bristol Post-Boy, one of the first provincial newspapers in the country.
The Bendon family are ensuring that this traditional Bristol trade lives on through their Whitehall Printing Company.

Colin Bendon, Chairman, and his sons Adam and Joe
It was founded 35 years ago by Colin Bendon who had become an expert in litho print after undertaking a college apprenticeship in printing. Colin ran the presses, visited clients, processed the orders and even made the deliveries himself.
Today his sons, Adam and Joe, are joint Managing Directors while he is Chairman.

"My wife, Sarah, also works for the company on the health and safety and HR side, while Joe's wife, Lucy, looks after the marketing. Colin's wife, Pamela, is company secretary. So we are truly a family firm," says Adam Bendon.
Whitehall Printing has a total of 21 people on the payroll. Despite the recession 2011 was a record year for the firm. With customer demand outstripping the capacity of its original factory in the Whitehall area, the firm moved to a new site in Barton Hill, three times the size. It is a modern, low-energy plant with digital presses, a state-of-the art design studio, offices and meeting rooms.
The firm recorded its highest ever financial performance, with a year on year increase of 15 per cent in turnover, and is planning further expansion. The directors are also planning to create an apprenticeship opportunity in printing and put more investment into the development of staff.
