REG Illingworth's passion for renewable energy began when he moved in next door to a nuclear power station in south Gloucestershire.

Although the Oldbury-on-Severn station generated its last megawatt of electricity in February after 50 years' service, Reg is as keen as ever in his opposition to nuclear power.

He gave up running a drain-cleaning business to concentrate on his mission of getting people to think "green", and 20 months ago set up Altereco, a renewables and energy efficiency business.

He describes his eight full-time staff as a "team of individuals who are committed to the vision of a world which does not rely on fossil fuel or nuclear power".

Altereco has also started an apprenticeship scheme to educate potential young employees in the clean technology sector.

Altereco supplies and installs solar photovoltaic panels on roofs, heat pumps that use thermal energy from the ground to heat water and radiators, and air pumps.

Mr Illingworth believes in practising what he preaches and has installed solar panels on the roof of his offices on the edge of the Cabot Circus shopping and leisure centre.

"We have also invested in thermal imaging technology that can quantify the heat loss from a building in terms of money and carbon within minutes," he explained.

The firm is also a founder member of the Bristol Solar Group, formed with the help of Bristol City Council, to help the city become a major solar-powered city.

Altereco was also a runner-up in the Social Responsibility category of the Post's Business Awards.

“Great. Good to see someone doing good.

Now if they could just remove their electric cars from the pavements that they're parked on and blocking outside their offices everyday (presumably parked there as that's as far as the power leads to recharge them reach) and their vans from the nearby (mandatory solid white lined, so actually illegal to park on) cycle lanes then they would be getting even more right.”
