The 45 bedroom hotel, which closed in 2004, sits on a 0.1 hectare site at Madeira Road and lies within the Birnbeck Conservation area.

The scheme, drawn up by Pegasus Planning Group, would see the four storey building retained and refurbished. The exiting mews building would also be converted to a refuse and cycle store with a two bedroom apartment created above.

The extension at the front of the building would be removed along with the large balconies which run around the building.

As part of the scheme the building would be re-rendered and the windows replaced.

In the application, architects for Pegasus Planning Group, said: "The site currently accommodates a heavily dilapidated hotel which has remained unused for approximately eight years.

"In this the respect the site in its current state greatly detracts from the character and appearance of the surrounding conservation area."

Previous plans to demolish the hotel and build a new five storey building with 40 flats were refused by councillors due to the design and density of the development.
