Run-down community centre to get vital repairs
A RUN-down building in Horfield is set to be transformed for community use.
The Horfield Community Centre, a temporary building that used to be run as a youth project, is getting vital repairs thanks to a partnership of residents.
The Bristol Sundown Rotary Club, Bristol Community Housing Foundation, Bristol City Council, Filton Avenue Junior School, Avon and Somerset Police and the Horfield Community Association have joined forces to put together a week of DIY action.
The work will begin tomorrow and is due to go on until Friday, February 17.
Local residents and partners are being invited to volunteer to help to decorate the building and fix up its exterior so that it will be possible to reopen its doors later this spring.
A number of businesses – including Kellaway Building Supplies, Alpha Clearance, Tesco and B&Q – are supporting the project.
Horfield-based Golesworthy Flooring is even providing the building with an entire new floor.
Janet Knight, chairwoman of the Horfield Community Association, said: "We have been bowled over by the amount of support we have found in the area and it is really encouraging to know so many people will chip in to help. We want to be able to open up the building again later this spring so we can provide a place where local people can create their own groups and projects that will help this area to flourish."
Anyone who is prepared to do some basic DIY during Action Week is welcome to drop in at any time from 10am to 4pm, but they will need to take along old clothing and strong footwear.
The group also needs donations of food and refreshment to keep the energy levels up.

“Now this is the "Big Community" we all need to adopt! Well done everyone who got this off the ground, and all those who will have a hand in seeing it through!”
