Former teammates of teenage hit-and-run victim Troy Atkinson will take part in a rugby match organised in his memory.

The match between the 15-year-old's old club Nailsea & Backwell and an invitation XV will be played at the Dings Crusaders ground in Lockleaze on Sunday.

Mark Wilson, Troy's former coach at Nailsea & Backwell, said it was the players' idea to stage the match to raise money to help cover the costs of the teenager's funeral.

He said: "It's fair to say it was prompted by a number of Troy's former teammates and they thought it would be a good way of remembering him and as a mark of respect.

"It will be played between 15 of his former teammates against a team made up of various players he played against and with, some of whom are from the Bristol Schools' team.

"The Barbarians team will be made up of players from Clifton Rugby Club, St Bernadette's, the Old Reds, Weston Hornets and Dings Crusaders."

Mr Wilson said many of Troy's friends and relatives were expected to be watching the match.

He said: "The reason we are playing it at the Dings is that it is where many of Troy's former teammates now play and also because it's somewhere easy for his family to get to. His mum and brothers will hopefully be there.

"We will ask players to pay a match fee and we'll do a collection on the day from those who are supporting."

Winger Troy, from Hartcliffe, played for Nailsea & Backwell at under 12, 13, and 14 level where he finished top try scorer every season before joining St Mary's Rugby Club in Bradley Stoke.

Last month, Mr Wilson described Troy as a "lovely lad" who was naturally talented and said his former teammates had been devastated by his death.

The 15-year-old former Withywood Community School pupil was out with a friend in Cabot Circus on April 28 when he was hit by a Mercedes at the junction of Penn Street, Broad Weir and Lower Castle Street. The car did not stop, despite the windscreen being smashed.

Troy died in Frenchay Hospital after suffering severe head injuries.

Dozens of floral tributes, messages and a Nailsea & Backwell rugby shirt were laid near the scene of the crash outside the Castlemead building.

A march supported by more than 300 friends and family was held a week after the accident to raise money for funeral costs.

The rugby match will be played at the Dings Crusaders ground in Landseer Avenue, Lockleaze, at 11am on Sunday.
