Rude and riding without hands
A FEW years ago I wrote to this paper about the lycra-clad idiots who fly up and down the Bristol-to-Bath path like they're some modern-day Eddie Merckx (look him up).
I was quite appalled at the way these people (predominately male) treated this shared space. I'm a cyclist myself, never even wanted to pass a driving test, and felt that they were giving cyclists a bad name. So many near misses especially near the primary school in Greenbank.
I asked at the time why these people couldn't just leave five minutes earlier rather than endangering both themselves and other path users.
I moved away for a few years but have recently moved back to Fishponds only to discover it's got worse! My little boy's four now and rides his own bike but the amount of times I've had people shout at me as I cycle slightly behind and to the right of him to give him cover is numerous.

I've even noticed speed limit signs and slow down notices by the school which get completely ignored, but over the last few days I've noticed an even more impractical and idiotic thing happening and that's people riding up and down here no handed. Now I'll admit to doing this when I was a boy but on one day (April 30) I counted six people doing this and none of them was under 20, one even shouted to get out of his way while I was pushing my bike, with puncture and laden trailer, rather than hold his bars and steer. Guys if you want to ride at 25 – 30 mph then ride on the road where you can keep pace with the traffic, but believe me riding like an idiot on this path and then bellowing at people to move is just plain rude, you all know who you are so please stop thinking you are somebody special and remember this is a space for all of us, because I'm going to stop being polite if none of you idiots change. And a middle-aged bloke with a trailer can sure slow you down when he gets tired and has to catch his breath!
