Royal Mail building: Sort out messy site
Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy has raised an important concern about the derelict former Royal Mail sorting office in Cattle Market Road.
The state of the building does not create a good impression of Bristol for those arriving in the city on the train from London. It certainly does not convey the message that one would expect about the second most important city in Britain after London itself.

As Ms McCarthy says, the area behind Temple Meads could be a lovely part of the city. It is ripe for prime riverside development, but currently it resembles nothing more than an extended tip. As she also says, perhaps the Cattle Market Road site should be considered for compulsory purchase.
Bristol rarely misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The Cattle Market Road site could provide an impressive new entrance to Temple Meads, similar to the atriums of the London stations such as Euston.

“I go past the old "SSO" (Station Sorting Office) every day on the way to work. Nothing much, to date, has been done to the site except to strip it of any valuable metals. It has, on more than one occasion, been used as a Rave venue, perhaps something that suggests a new use for the place, a stadium perhaps?”
